Jazz Piano Player and composer, Makoto Takenaka was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and was brought up in Kyoto, Japan. After acquiring BA and MA in education from international Christian University in Tokyo, he came to the United States to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Makoto Takenaka began playing piano at the age of five. He studied with Toshiko Nakamura and Takehiro Honda. While attending Berklee College of Music, Makoto studied jazz under Ray Santisi.

After Graduating with a Magna Cum Laude (BA), he became the first Japanese assistant professor in Berklee, and has now been promoted to an associate professor.

He has been playing on TV, Radio, and in many concerts including the Hatch Shell, Berklee Performance Center, BU, BC, Harvard, MIT, U-Mass, and others.
