GX-2 Anniversary Editors Choice Award

Music Inc. Magazine has awarded the best-selling GX2 Grand piano its prestigious Editor’s Choice Award. The limited-edition piano was created to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Kawai’s arrival in North America and was just delivered to preferred dealers in January of this year.

“It is always an honor to receive this award for any of our instruments, but to receive it for one that was created for this special anniversary is particularly rewarding,” says Kawai America VP Cory Callies. “We knew that using an ancient finish on the world’s most advanced piano creating the perfect fusion of tradition and technology was bold, and now that it has been received to such acclaim is a compliment to all our associates whose ingenuity and craftsmanship made it possible.”

Kawai is no stranger to winning honors and awards: Since 2003, it has received 15 awards for its pianos from Music Inc. alone and a total of 59 from various other magazines and international organizations.

Just 60 limited-edition pianos, each of the GX2 grand and its sister, the K-500 upright, have been built. Both feature rare hand-painted accents using the ancient Japanese method of lacquering called “urushi.” It also uses a technique called “Maki-e,” where the Kawai logo and the 60th-anniversary logo are created by sprinkling fine gold flakes onto the wet lacquer for a spellbinding effect. “While the GX2 boasts many wonderful features, we believe these two aspects are especially appealing and are what distinguishes this piano,” adds Callies.
